Maersk raises emergency surcharge for ECS shipments to Khor Fakkan in the UAE and Sohar in Oman.

  • news

Maersk has issued a notice adjusting its ECS (Emergency Contingency Surcharge) rates for flights to Khor Fakkan in the UAE and Sohar in Oman. This adjustment covers a wide range of routes, including parts of South Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Oceania, Europe, North America, and South America.

New Fees

According to the official announcement, the main standards are as follows:

  • 20-foot dry cabinetUSD 1,800 / container
  • 40-foot dry cabinet/high cube cabinetUSD 3,000 / container
  • 20-foot freezerUSD 1,900 / container
  • 40-foot high freezerUSD 3,800 / container
  • 45-foot tall cabinetUSD 3,000 / container

The numbers show that refrigerated containers and 40-foot containers are more significantly affected. For goods that already rely on shipping costs, this surcharge is no longer a "minor adjustment."

What does this mean for the market?

Khor Fakkan and Sohar are both important transshipment points in the Gulf region. Maersk's increase in ECS (Express Delivery Rate) indicates that shipping companies are continuing to pass on current regional risks and additional costs such as detours, scheduling, and insurance to shippers. If other shipping companies follow suit, shipping prices in the same region will likely remain strong.
