Multiple shipping companies are simultaneously levying peak season surcharges for routes departing from the Far East, covering multiple routes to Northern Europe, North America, and South America.

In early June, major shipping companies such as Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk issued a series of notices regarding peak season surcharges (PSS), with multiple routes departing from the Far East increasing prices simultaneously.

Hapag-Lloyd: Starting June 8th

Far East to Northern Europe and Mediterranean routes:

  • 20-foot box: $500
  • 40-foot box: $1000

Maersk: Multi-route phased execution

route Effective Date Rates
Far East → Northern Europe/Mediterranean June 10 USD 300/20′
Far East → USA and Canada June 17 The specific amount is yet to be announced.
Far East → East Coast of South America June 4 USD 2000/TEU

It is worth noting that Hapag-Lloyd's PSS rates are significantly higher than Maersk's Nordic/Mediterranean standards. The difference in surcharges between the two shipping companies on the same route may be related to their respective capacity configurations and customer structures.

Export costs will continue to rise until mid-June.

Several shipping companies have chosen to collect PSS (Pay Selling Standard) at the same time, which, combined with the GRI (Good Shipping Rate) that took effect on June 1st, means that export freight rates will remain high throughout the first half of June. Sellers need to include PSS in their budgets when calculating logistics costs.
