Shipping to India via FedEx: Export Customs Clearance Tips

During our previous promotional campaign for shipments to India, many new and existing customers asked about customs clearance requirements for exports to India. This article highlights some important points regarding the documents that must accompany shipments to India for customs clearance.

Important points Notes
Enter the recipient’s phone number correctly All shipments must include the recipient’s mobile phone number and email address in the recipient details section of the air waybill (AWB). The mobile phone number must be 10 digits, without a leading “0” or country code (+91).
Complete the commercial invoice in full Please note the following:

1. Valid email address and contact details for the importer (full name, phone number, and valid email address. The shipper and recipient details must match those on the waybill).

2. Complete product descriptions (general descriptions are not accepted; describe each product separately).

3. Correct quantities and units of measurement.

4. Correct value for each product (including currency) and the HS CODE for each product (shipments with undervalued goods will be reassessed and fined).

5. Incoterms (e.g., FOB, CIF).

6. List freight and insurance charges separately.

7. Clearly state the payment method.

8. The commercial invoice must be stamped and signed by the shipper.

9. For businesses, the importer’s Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) must match the shipper’s documents.

Provide KYC documents The recipient must provide KYC documents before or upon the shipment’s arrival. KYC documents include the consignee’s identity and address documents, authorization letters, etc. The recipient’s name/company name on the invoice and waybill must match the KYC documents. Shippers are advised to send the KYC link to recipients in advance. Recipients can also find it in the FAQs and work instructions below.
