Recently, union members at UPS passed a strike authorization with 97% votes in favor, clearing the way for a possible strike on August 1. The union president said workers are determined to fight for the best UPS contract ever and will strike if the company doesn't give them what they deserve.
At the same time, the union and UPS reached a preliminary agreement on new heatstroke prevention and cooling measures, which is a big step towards the success of labor contract negotiations. The agreement includes the gradual installation of air conditioning equipment on delivery vehicles to improve the conditions of workers working in high temperatures for a long time.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, several UPS employees have been hospitalized for heatstroke since 2015. However, UPS has long refused to install air conditioning in its trucks and vans.
